VOLCOM GIRLS TEAM UPDATE - SPRING 2007

The Volcom girls have been extremely busy and out and about during the first few months of the 2007 year. Traveling, contests, events, having fun and sincere dedication to the sport of surfing, snowboarding and skating has been the main drive for the girls team over the past eight weeks. Here’s what has been going on lately:

Although this winter has been slightly below average for snowfall, it still has been a good winter for our snow team. Volcom street wear rider Elena Hight started off the winter with a Transworld Snow “Rookie of the Year” win as well as a “Grom of the Year” win at the first annual Fuel Action Sport Awards. Elena then went on to the real action getting a 2nd place finish at the Breckenridge Grand Prix which she then followed up with a 2nd place finish at the Mt. Bachelor Grand Prix. Elena has been training hard which has showed in her contest results. Coming off a nice Christmas break of surfing on Kauai, Elena went into the Winter X Games with determination. Elena used the spotlight of the X Games to showcase her new trick, a backside 900. Elena placed 3rd at the X Games and became the first girl to do a backside 9 in competition! Then at the Vans Cup in Tahoe, Elena took her riding as well as women’s halfpipe riding to the next level by being the first girl to successfully do back-to-back 900’s. She not only astonished the crowd but also went on to win the event and $17,000!

Janna Meyen started off the year taking advantage of living in one part of the country where there actually was some snow fall. Janna spent the first few weeks of January riding Mt. Baker and getting ready to head to Colorado for the X Games. Unfortunately Janna hurt her ankle right before the event started… she made the best of the situation by doing press and behind the scenes work for the event.

Cheryl Maas started off the winter getting Snowboarder MBM’s “European Rider of the Year” a big accomplishment no doubt for any rider. Cheryl has been blowing up editorially with coverage in this winters Snowboarder, Transworld Snow, Snowboard and many other European Snow Magazines. Cheryl has been riding hard and following the Ticket to Ride (TTR) Tour of events all year, where after the final event, she landed herself a third place overall rating. Way to go Cheryl!

The 2007 ASP World Championship Tour kicked off down in Australia with the first Women’s event of the year at Snapper Rocks. Claire Bevilacqua spent the first two months of 2007 training, surfing and getting prepared mentally and physically for the start of the WCT at Snapper Rocks, where she placed 9th - a good start for the year. Claire is confident going into the season as she states, “I feel I’m in the best shape of my life and ready to get things kickin”! Claire’s next WCT stop is Bells Beach, Australia that kicks off next week.

Volcom team rider and surfing phenomena Coco Ho has been spending much of her time in the water in Hawaii! Coco spent the New Years in Australia for the ASP Junior Pro Championships where she placed 3rd overall. This was a huge accomplishment for Coco. In the recent March issue of Transworld Surf, Coco was named as a top up and comer to definitely watch for in the future. Coco has spent the rest of January and February getting some serious water time back at home on the north shore of Oahu. She just recently went back to Australia for the first WCT events of the year to support her fellow Volcom team riders! Keep updated of Coco’s travels at www.volcom/girls.com

In January, Volcom welcomed new team rider Quincy Davis to the girls surf team. Quincy is an 11-year-old from Puerto Rico and New York has been surfing since the young age of 6. She is an amazing up and comer who definitely poses a competition threat amongst the girls on the East Coast. Quincy just recently won the girls division and placed 5th in the boys division at the Puerto Rico VQS event on March 4th. Following up her win at the VQS contest, Quincy placed 3rd at the Corona Cup Pro. We are so proud to have Quincy a part of the Volcom family!

Volcom skate team rider Elizabeth Nitu has been ripping it up back at her home in Northern California. She has been skating daily getting ready for the summer events. This past year Elizabeth was the youngest competitor at the Summer X Games and placed 6th at the Women’s Street Finals. Elizabeth was just recognized by the Los Gatos Weekly Times with an interview and write up on her accomplishments over the past year. Keep an eye out, you’ll be seeing a lot more of Elizabeth in the future!

Musician Tristan Prettyman has been on a roll; she just recently got back from a Tavarua trip on a surf trip with Volcom pro surfer, Claire Bevilacqua. Tristan is back in California spending time with her band, practicing and getting ready for her next tour. She was just recently on “Late Night with Conan O’Brien” where she played with G Love live on the show. Check it out a clip from the show right here on http://www.youtube.com and check out her music on Tristan’s Myspace Page.

The Totally Crustaceous Surf Tour is under way with only a couple stops left before the $100,000 Championships at 54th Street in Newport Beach on May 11-13. The girls division has been blowing up with more and more girls entering at each stop. We look forward to having an amazing set of talented girls invited to the Champs! Keep up to date with more info on the VQS tour at www.volcom.com.

The 2006/2007 Peanut Butter and Rail Jam Tour has been on fire, with only four stops left until the Championships at Mammoth Mountain on May 19th. The newly formed girls division has been a huge success at each stop… at times we have had over 50 girls show up to compete! The talent level and progressive riding of the ladies is amazing. We look forward to having a solid group of girls at the PBRJ Championships. To get more information and keep updated on the PBRJ tour check out www.volcom.com.
