Here is Zoltan Bathory’s answers (FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH)
Production/recording questions:
1. Do you have a home studio? If so, where?
Hell Yes. I have a pro-tools studio in Las Vegas.?
2. What are the hardest thing in recording at home?
For drums and vocals I always go to a bigger studio. Drums are obviously way too loud even if Motorhead lives next door to you.
Now, for vocals, you can build or buy an isolation booth.? However, in my opinion it still have a negative effect on vocalists. Vocalists have to feel that they can let it all out as loud as they want…. So I always record vocals in a commercial studio. ?
3. Biggest pros and cons of home recording?
Pros: You can figure out what you want without any time pressure, and when you write you should be already tracking everything…? Often the first takes are the best, and if you grabbed that first take you can keep that magic for your actual record…? Your ‘demos’ can become albums. ?
Cons: Commercial studios usually have better equipment; because you still have to lay down a lot of cash for good gear. The bigger problem I see however is that musicians get so involved learning about their gear and software they forget to make music. I consciously limited myself on ‘how much gear I was getting’ - I’m a musician at first… so I have to be able to write, and record guitars good enough to keep them for the final record … but nothing more. I love gear - I know I’d be wasting my time experimenting and learning recording tricks. Writing good songs is more important…?
4. Will the big studios become obsolete?
Absolutely not. They have better gear, better rooms, and most likely better engineers than you can become. Write your songs, do your pre-production but let a pro mix your stuff….?
Your current books:
1. What would you say your current top 5 reads are and why?
I like books with at least an educated attempt to take a crack at reality…? I can’t give you top 5… but the full body of Carlos Castaneda’s work is definitely in the top… (Journey To Ixtlan, Tales Of Poweretc) ? I also read Eastern philosophy, all the Buddhist and Hindi literature, basically anything that ponders on what the f*%k is going on here…? Another interest I have is science - so I read a lot of science books and magazines… ?
For aspiring artists (fine arts) within bands:
1. What medium do you prefer to work on and why?
I used to paint but now I switched to digital media… everything else would be impossible on the tour bus…?
Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop is the name of the game today.?
2. Do you have samples and how would you explain each one? If so, send some.
All the Five Finger Death Punch Logos were done in adobe illustrator… I have a partner in digital crime,?
My friend Sxully Essex and I are professional pixels pushers… we did the death punch logo together, and everything you see on the band’s website… I also run a fight gear company “Alphadog Combat Gear”? (alphadog.tv) so I design a lot of gear and all the shirts, logos.
All done in Illustrator. ?
3. Were you formally educated? Yes, I have a degree in graphic design.?
