Clare seems to love this folk metal album from MÄGO DE OZ with this glowing cd review

MÄGO DE OZ

A COSTA DA MORTE

LOCOMOTIVE RECORDS

!!!!.5

This double live CD from Spanish folk metallers Mägo de Oz (“Wizard of Oz”) is a real treat. The band has been around since about 1989 and has steadily released albums since the mid 90s. Their clever amalgam of power/heavy metal, rock operas and strong folk influences is excellently showcased here, and of course it also serves as a compilation in a way and thus an introduction to newcomers. With nine members, including a violinist, three guitarists and a flautist/bagpipe player, creates a full, rich sound and does their songs justice in a live setting. One of the best elements of A Costa da Morte is the absolutely live sound it has…what’s the point of a live album that’s been cleaned up to sound like a studio recording? I don’t know. At any rate, Mägo de Oz has kept the somewhat rough sound of a live recording which adds a very true atmosphere—the sense of having definitely caught a moment—plus, with the help of a really wild and enthused audience, it’s the next best thing to actually being at the concert.

The not so great Til We Die album/cd review from nice Clare

TILL WE DIE

PRESSING ON

LOCOMOTIVE RECORDS

!!

Though I try not to judge an album by its cover, in some cases it’s warranted, particularly where metal is concerned. One can easily tell a power metal CD from a black or death metal album; similarly, one gets that certain whatever-core vibe from the stark, clear-cut cover for the album in question. The album art is fine, but the music is not. Pressing On is an unfortunately obvious and generic-sounding metalcore release—screaming vs. clear vocals, chuggy guitars, breakdown, music a tad formulaic, lyrics a little on the angsty side. What is actually most disappointing about Pressing On is that the record is under-produced, a fact I don’t want to hold against the band, but it rather undermines the sound they’re going for, which is heavy, hard and to-the-point. The percussion sounds like it’s coming from down the hallway somewhere while the guitars are muddy; singer Mitty is therefore deserted in the foreground and sounds melodramatic compared to the left-in-the-dust instruments. This results in a total lack of emotion throughout the album. Hopefully these guys maybe have it in them to be a little more original, or at least convincing with the sound they’ve chosen…maybe next time.

The Pain Principle grating WAITING FOR FLIES album review

The Pain Principle grating WAITING FOR FLIES album review

PAIN PRINCIPLE

WAITING FOR FLIES

BLIND PROPHECY RECORDS

Credit where credit is due: Pain Principle does serve up some fairly righteous death Metal riffology, mainly of the Swedish extraction (think Soilwork). But I must admit, the super chunky vocals do grate on me after a while. But don’t let me ruin it for you: Pain Principal certainly delivers.
