Jethro Tull new DVD on in May

Jethro Tull new DVD on in May

JETHRO TULL’S JACK IN THE GREEN:

LIVE IN GERMANY

~On DVD May 20~

British Classic Rock Band Going Strong After 40 Years!

We’re going to skip the obvious question of why this great band isn’t in the Rock’n’Roll Hall Of Fame and get right to the particulars. After the commercially and artistically successful Live At Montreux 2003 DVD, Eagle Rock Entertainment, on May 20, will release Jethro Tull’s Jack In The Green: Live In Germany, an enticing DVD compendium of in-concert rarities [running time: 96 minutes] spanning the years 1970 to 1993.

The main bulk of the action here centers around 1982 and 1986. It’s amazing to think that this band, led by the redoubtable and enigmatic Ian Anderson, confronting its 40th Anniversary later this year, has never really took any extended time off. Constantly active, one of the most globally enduring and endearing bands of all time, Tull has the kind of international fan base that follows them around the globe. Like the Deadheads of old, Tullheads are no less passionate. Tull shows are like a family celebration of life and longevity. And these shows exhibit those good vibes in spades!

Anderson, of course, is the key. Whether on flute, guitar, mandolin or harmonica, this brilliant singer/songwriter/entertainer/salmon farmer holds sway over his audiences like “The Pied Piper Of Hamelin.” Black Sabbath’s Tony Iommi, who was in Jethro Tull for a brief time, always said that Ian knew how to run a band and make it work. That truth still exists today. Anderson is hands-on and pro-active. He, in fact, has fully approved all clips from this DVD, going so far as to add photographs from his personal collection in the packaging.

And Martin Barre has to be one of the most under-recognized and overlooked greatest Progressive Rock guitarists in history. The six notes he wrote as the riff of “Aqualung” alone stands as testament to his genius. Also an accomplished flute player and composer, he is the perfect foil for Anderson’s wily showmanship.

He tells MTV, "Em is in shape right now. He looks good. I seen him in Detroit. He’s gonna look real good when you see him return."

Eminem, who has been absent from the music scene since last year, has been the subject of health and weight issues for months. Reports even claim that he was approached by a weight management company to endorse their product.

The "Stan" rapper, real name Marshall Mathers, had been hospitalized with pneumonia in January, prompting speculations that his weight, which reportedly reached a staggering 200 lbs, was the cause of it.

However, Curtis James Jackson - who is famously known as 50 Cent - insists his fellow hip hop top name is doing great.

He says, "The last time I seen him we played basketball together. He had a knee injury so we chilled a little bit."

Some say Metal is on the rise with great Whitesnake album and good Motley Crue single

Some say Metal is on the rise with great Whitesnake album and good Motley Crue single

My wife and I were in the car this weekend, and I decided to play the new Whitesnake album “Good To Be Bad” for her. She typically doesn’t really like the harder stuff, but I’ve been really impressed with the album over the last week (review to come) and I thought I’d see what her thoughts were.

She didn’t dig it.

But apparently a lot of people are high on David Coverdale and company’s latest. It debut at #7 in the U.K. this past week, Whitesnake’s best showing there in over 20 years. And they aren’t the only metal masters making noise. As I mentioned last week, there’s a lot of buzz going around regarding Judas Priest’s new album “Nostradamus” in June. The band will also be on the road with Heaven and Hell, Motorhead, and Testament for the “Metal Masters” tour. Speaking of road shows, Motley Crue’s “Crue Fest” is going to be a hot tour, and their new single “Saints Of Los Angeles” is the band’s most Crue-sounding single since “Dr. Feelgood” all the way back in 1989. Throw in the buzz about a new Metallica album for the fall, and you’ve got the makings of a very loud 2008.

How about you? Are you excited about any of the above? The new Crue or Whitesnake single? The chance to see Judas Priest and Heaven and Hell on the same stage? Or how about the guys in the video below, whose name you can use as today’s bonus code (one word)?

Metallica may join free music community as they consider free album giveaway

Metallica may join free music community as they consider free album giveaway

Metallica, among the most ardent crusaders against online music file sharing, have indicated they might follow Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead in releasing tracks for free over the internet.

Metallica were one of the first bands to sue people for copyright infringement and attracted scorn from internet users for helping shut down the peer-to-peer downloading tool Napster.

Before Napster’s demise the band was among the most vocal critics of file sharing. Its drummer, Lars Ulrich, famously showed up at Napster’s headquarters in 2000 brandishing the screen names of 335,000 people the band said had been illegally downloading its songs, demanding the company block those users.

But the music industry has changed tremendously in the past eight years.

Bands and record labels long ignored the threat of the internet and for a time refused to experiment with online distribution. But with physical CD sales in persistent decline and legal music downloads only partly making up for the lost revenue, the music industry is frantically searching for a new business model.

Artists including Nine Inch Nails and Radiohead both ditched their record labels, opting to sell their music directly to fans over the internet.

Radiohead’s In Rainbows was offered on the band’s website for two months before launching in stores and fans could download it for free or for whatever price they were willing to pay.

Nine Inch Nails are selling their latest four-volume album, Ghosts I-IV, through their website and the first nine tracks are offered for free, including on BitTorrent websites that also house reams of pirated music.

In an interview with Rolling Stone magazine, Ulrich said Metallica’s contract with Warner Music expired after their next album.

"We want to be as free a player as possible," he said.

"We’ve been observing Radiohead and [Nine Inch Nails frontman] Trent Reznor and in 27 years or however long it takes for the next record, we’ll be looking forward to everything in terms of possibilities with the internet."

Ulrich said eight years ago the band was a fierce critic of sharing music over the web because the members thought that sharing should be on the artists’ terms.

"Back in the day there was a much bigger question about ‘On whose terms?’ " Ulrich said.

"We said, ‘Wait a minute, it should be about the artist.’ Then all hell broke loose and we sat on the sidelines for a while."

For their part, Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails have accepted that it is virtually impossible to stop music piracy. Instead of trying to fight back the tide, both bands have embraced the internet and, by giving some songs away for free, have been able to harness the web’s viral marketing power.

While many, even most, users will be content with the freebies, even if a small percentage go on to buy the music, the bands, thanks to the low overheads of online distribution, can turn a tidy profit.

Nine Inch Nails announced that Ghosts I-IV, released via NIN.com, earned the band $US1.6 million ($1.7 million). Official sales figures for Radiohead’s In Rainbows haven’t been released but when the album was released on CD in stores, after already spreading virally online, it hit No.1 on the Billboard Top 200 chart.
