According to Jason Gregory from Gigwise.com, music Mogul Danny Goldberg has described the late John Bonham, LED ZEPPELIN’s original drummer, as a “an angry and mean drunk”.

Goldberg, who worked as a publicist for the band, makes the comment in a new book, Bumping Into Geniuses, which details his life inside the music industry.

He also recalls an interview where Bonham, who he regards as the “greatest drummer in rock”, responded angrily to a critic who questioned his lengthy drum solos.

“Bonham grabbed the reviewer’s lapels and yelled, ‘Look, I’ve had about enough of you people!’” he writes.

The exerts, which appeared in the New York Daily News, also highlight how the atmosphere around the band in 1973 “was one of tension, exacerbated by huge quantities of cocaine. Violence was one bad mood away.”

Bonham’s son, Jason, took over his drum seat when the band reformed at the O2 Arena in London last December.

Goldberg’s book is released next month.

Madonna signs with Live Nation. The Music Industry has now been put on alert

Madonna signs with Live Nation. The Music Industry has now been put on alert

Right on for Madonna who has now signed on with Live Nation for $120 M+. As I have talked to some fine folks over at her former label, Warner, it has come upon the label to start signing ‘360 degree’ contracts which means any new artists will sign away their CD, merchandising, and touring rights. KORN did this with Virgin/EMI a few years ago. Victory Records does this with their own publishing and tour booking agencies. It is the only way for labels to survive. As for Madonna, this is a huge loss for Warner. Her label Maverick may also be defunct. Who is next? They say it will be Red Hot Chili Peppers. As for Live Nation, they now basically own every aspect of Madonna. She is not poor from this but she has lead the music industry into a new direction. Who is Live Nation? They were the touring aspect of Clear Channel from a few years ago but have recently taken over the House of Blues Tour Promoters (at least here in Canada). Next up? I have heard rumors of Apple starting a label. JAY-Z and Beyoncé Knowles may be part of that deal.

Within Temptation has come a long way in the last ten years. From their humble beginnings, the Dutch band have now sold over 1.5 million CDs and DVDs world-wide, making them not only Holland’s biggest selling musical export but also one of the fastest growing new rock acts internationally. Formed in 1996 around the nucleus of guitarist Robert Westerholt and vocalist Sharon den Adel, Within Temptation released their debut album Enter. The album saw the band playing gigs across the continent, firmly cementing their phenomenal live reputation. 2000 proved to be a pivotal year for the band. Building on their strong live following by playing all the major European festivals, the band released their second album Mother Earth which again garnered critical acclaim. Returning to the studio in 2004, Within Temptation were set to record their third and most successful record to date, The Silent Force. The album went to #1 in the Netherlands and Finland, #5 in Germany, top 10 in Belgium and a myriad of Gold and Platinum certifications followed.

With their 2007 release, The Heart Of Everything, Within Temptation topped the charts once again. The album entered the Dutch charts at the #1 position, reached a #2 position in Belgium and Finland, and top 5 in Japan, Sweden, Portugal and Germany. Within Temptation set out on a major tour at the end of the summer hitting Toronto on September 11th at The Mod Club Theatre.

Few bands can turn adversity on its head the way Misery Signals has. Following the departure of founding vocalist, the band rebounded in style by finding the perfect replacement in Karl Schubach who was part of an open audition that had hopefuls recording their vocals on an instrumental track available on their myspace page. The fact that Schubach is a guitarist by trade and has never sang in a band before makes the story even more remarkable. Re-loaded, the band hit the Cleveland recording studio of Producer Ben Schigel (Chimaira, ZAO) and recorded their second full-length Mirrors, released last August on Ferret Music. The band crafted an album which is even heavier than their debut Of Malice And The Magnum Heart, but also more atmospheric and ambient as well. Check out Misery Signals live on September 7th at the El Mocambo. This is one show you do not want to miss!

As celebrity gossip shows and reality programming continue to be the dominant choice of entertainment for millions, many musicians have opted not to challenge the masses and instead write short, simple and predictable songs that sound good on the radio…then there’s Coheed and Cambria.

For three years now, the New York group has been releasing dynamic, multi-faceted albums that are as infectious as they are innovative. Their songs are packed with undeniable hooks and contemporary textures, but their sonic vistas are reminiscent of great progressive and atmospheric bands from the ‘60s and ‘70s. Best of all, like the musicians themselves, the mix is neither pretentious nor alienating.

Coheed and Cambria’s latest album, Good Apollo, I’m Burning Star IV - Volume One: From Fear Through the Eyes of Madness, is a showcase of the band members’ artistry and musicianship that’s a refreshing alternative to most mainstream rock. Like the band’s 2003 gold album, In Keeping Secrets of Silent Earth: 3, Good Apollo is euphoric, conceptual and challenging, but it’s even more steeped in the classic rock of the band members’ youth.

Since the band’s impressive debut album for Equal Vision Records, The Second Stage Turbine Blade in 2002, the band has been touring nonstop. They traveled from dingy clubs to big festivals in the US, Europe and Japan for 18 months in support of the first album. Don’t miss them this time around in Toronto at the Kool Haus on October 29th.
