An Appetite for Destruction: Guns N Roses tribute band rips through NYC during tour
Between the Velvet Revolver split up rumors and lack of a definitive date for Chinese Democracy, I was intrigued when I heard Appetite For Destruction, a Guns and Roses tribute band was coming to New York on Friday night. When I found the current band lineup includes Izzy and not Gilby, I was beginning to get excited. The fact that the venue had a full bar sealed the deal.
Any GNR tribute band discussion has to start with the lead singer, and AFD has a good one in Chad Atkins (Axl). Atkins raspy voice hits the chainsaw lyric highs as well as the bourbon soaked lows of Axl Rose. The show started in typical GNR fashion with “It’s So Easy” and “Mr. Brownstone”, followed by “Out to Get Me” and “Live and Let Die”. In addition to carving through the songs in Appetite for Destruction as well as the Use Your Illusion radio ballads they found time to appease hardcore fans with “Used To Love Her”, “Civil War”, and “Get In The Ring”.
The band itself looks the part and for the most part, plays the part of supporting their shifty front man, and this works for them. It also worked for the crowd at Sullivan Hall, made up mostly of NYU students and Jagermeister bombs, as fists pumped and even lighters flickered.
The most glaring differentiator between AFD and the original GNR would be the appreciation AFD has for their fans and this comes through in their performance.
For all of you waiting for a GNR reunion and release of Chinese Democracy, good luck. In the meantime, if you’re looking to fill the void check out AFD.

TESTAMENT ANNOUNCES 2008 TOUR DATES!!! NEW ALBUM – “THE FORMATION OF DAMNATION” - STREETS APRIL 29!!!!
Thrash legends Testament have announced upcoming tour dates for 2008. The band will be touring to support their April 29 release of “The Formation of Damnation.” The album marks Testament’s Nuclear Blast debut, and it is the first new studio album from the band since 1999’s landmark “The Gathering.”
“The Formation of Damnation” features the classic lineup of
Guitar World calls the album “unrelentingly rifftastic and ominously titled,” and Decibel counted “The Formation of Damnation” as one of the Top 25 Most Anticipated Albums of 2008.
Testament has also re-issued two classic albums, 1997’s “Demonic” and 1999’s “The Gathering” through Prosthetic Records. Both are available now. Prosthetic will also be re-issuing 2001’s “First Strike Still Deadly” in March with new art.
