Josh Homme’s vision of a riff-oriented, heavy rock band came to glorious fruition over 10 years ago with the formation of Queens of the Stone Age. Since then, the band—with a revolving lineup that has included the Screaming Trees’ Mark Lanegan and the Foo Fighters’ Dave Grohl—has developed an uncanny ability to unite rock fans of all stripes, from alterna-kids to indie-hipsters to metal head-bobbers and classic-rock enthusiasts, as well as earned the respect of its musical peers.
Queens of the Stone Age released their self-titled debut 1998, and followed up with Rated R. But it was the band’s third album, 2001’s Songs for the Deaf, that broke the group on radio and MTV. Buoyed by the success of the singles “No One Knows” and “Go With the Flow”, the album peaked with gold status in 2003 and has sold over 900,000 copies. The next album, Lullabies to Paralyze, featured the single “Little Sister”. Era Vulgaris, the Queens’ fifth, is a dark, powerful work featuring the singles “Sick Sick Sick” (earning the band its fourth Grammy nomination for Best Hard Rock Performance) and “Make It Wit Chu” has spawned some of the best reviews of the band’s career.
Don’t miss the Queens of the Stone Age at the Ottawa Civic Centre Arena on May 11th! Tickets are on sale this Friday at noon.
