Bubbleletter bubbleletter > bubbleletter < wieso, weshalb, warum - wer nicht fragt bleibt dumm.. print me a few hundred of these… i’m sure you have been in this situation before. you have to go to a store somewhere, so you take you car. upon arrival you move up and down the rows of parked cars hoping to find an open spot. then, you think you spotted an open spot but when you get closer you notice the parked car is situated centered on top of the line that divides 2 spaces turning two parking spots into one. well, i found something that may ease my and your fury when i encounter such idiotic and selfish behaviour. check out youparklikeanasshole.com . they provide you with a template that you can print out. you can select a variety of parking situations that you cross off and then you slip it underneath the persons windshield wiper. upon discovery of the slip they can then go to the website to see what they did wrong and how to correct it :) i like it. the only thing i have to overcome, is the fact that i am wasting paper (trees) on such thing. i’m in a tough spot. on another note - i had 97 comments out of which not a single one was a legit comment. sad. i’ll have to install a captcha of sorts so i don’t have to sift through all those comments. getting closer to finding out the gender of our baby!!! w00000000!! Posted on January 11th, 2007 by davidFiled under: life - 5 Comments » Interesting PNG Problem I was working on a site the other day that utilized a PNG work-around for IE (so I could use the transparency features) using the AlphaImageLoader filter and some other magic. Truth be told, I didn’t design the site, but it was interesting working with this. I later saw that you could avoid using the JavaScript solution by using behaviours (more about that here) - maybe a better solution, but what’s in place now seems to work well. As it turns out, when you have a semi-transparent PNG as a background in a div and place a link inside this div, the link becomes unusable in IE6/Win and probably 5.5 and less as well. I scoured the web for some answers and came across a page that talked about transparent PNGs and support in IE. It also offers a variety of solutions and even mentions my particular problem as well. The solution they propose seems to assume that you are using a tiled semi-transparent PNG. Apparently, a little bug in IE (surprise surprise) will cause the link to work inside the div if the background PNG is a certain size. Unfortunately in my situation, I wasn’t using a tiled PNG. I still tried sizing the image according to a ratio looking at the proposed sizes when using tiled PNGs, but that just wasn’t working out. After much fiddling and trial and error, I stumbled across a solution. Apparently, all I had to do was to assign the links a position of relative. So, I added -div-id a { position: relative; } and bam! it works in IE6 and presumably in other versions as well. It took Microsoft long enough, but they finally include PNG support with IE7. But until it takes over the market and replaces IE6 completely, we still have to deal with the work around. Posted on January 4th, 2007 by davidFiled under: work, web dev - 4 Comments » Found goodies… Hey, back so soon :) Just wanted to share a few things I found whilst surfing the interweb. Web 2.0 How-To Design Style Guide This is a great article. What I like about it, is the fact that it doesn’t talk so much about HOW TO creat typical web 2.0 designs, but more importantly why. It’s a good read overall. I think it’s a nice general guide for web design, not sure why it has to be labeled “web 2.0?. To me, Web 2.0 is more about a website’s features and not the design, although there are common design features among them. via web design from scratch Internet Explorer and the CSS Box Model It’s not really anything new, but it’s one of the better explanations of the box model problem in Internet Explorer. via 456 Berea Street Sidenote for Mac OSX I kind of stumbled across this a while back and it’s one of the few programs I have not deleted right away. It’s come in quite handy. Basically, it’s a little side bar that you can set to autohide or you can control it via hotkeys to show or not show and quickly add some ideas, thoughts or notes. It doesn’t invade you’re screen real estate and doesn’t take space up on the dock. Clean and simple design just top it off. I use to keep notes on projects that I work on, whether it would be things to I have to do or ideas to implement. You can also keep separate “drawers” and categorize your items that way. Aptana Aptana aims to be a web developer’s environment. I have actually been looking for applications that could handle a variety of tasks. I do like Textmate and Smultron for a variety of reasons, but I just needed a few extra features to make it complete. There are a few things that really made me enjoy using Aptana. The feature I enjoy the most is something that acts sort of like a built in source control system. It remembers the files contents for each save you make (I’m actually not sure how far back it remembers it to), but if you made a mistake along the way or really want to bring something back that you deleted multiple saves ago (even after closing the application), you can do a compare with any version that you saved and grab whatever necessary and implement it in the current version. I know for a project I was working on, it seems to have kept a few days worth of revisions. Aptana also has a built in FTP/SFTP syncing manager to sync your projects with a live site. This feature hasn’t been added too long ago, but I’m glad it was added. I didn’t like to have to open another program to do just upload files. Another neat feature is that if you are using external javascript libraries for your project for example and you are referencing functions from the javascript file in your code, it matches functions in external files as you type, so it decreases chances of you mispelling functions. Even if you are including a simple image tag it parses/autocompletes directories and image file names as you type further reducing the chance of typos. Aptana is built on Eclipse and natively supports syntax highlighting for XML, HTML, PHP, Javascript, ScriptDoc and CSS, with ASP.NET planned for the future. It’s available for Linux, Windows and Mac for FREE. There are lots of other features I didn’t touch on, but I don’t want to make this post too long :) The only downside to Aptana so far, is that there seems to be a speed issue at least on my Mac. It seems unresponsive and sluggish at times. The problem doesn’t seem to exist on my Windows machine, though. At least not to the same extent. Posted on December 21st, 2006 by davidFiled under: links, web dev - 4 Comments » Report Time So, it’s been a year already since I last I did an Annual Report for the same organization (PATH Inc.). They have asked me to do it again this year as a freelance project. I just finished it a few weeks ago and it has been quite a trip to the finish. There had been some human resources related changes at the organization, so it was a bit more chaotic this time around. It’s finished though. I won’t beat around the bush any longer. Here are some specs: Size: 8.5?W x 5.75?H Color: 2/2 (PMS 159 & PMS 201) Typefaces: Raleigh & Strayhorn MT Pages: 36 (Including Cover & Back Cover) Of course I brought some goodies, or not - depending on how you look at it :) Let’s just go down the list quick. Cover Inside Spread Mandatory Graphs More Mandatory Graphs and Stats A Story Highlight Names Galore! Staff Listing So, there you have it. I’m relieved to be done with it. I think it turned out OK. There are things I would have liked to change still, but that’s alright. Sadly, I’m most disappointed with the cover. Not the picture itself, but the design of it. It’s not terrible, but it’s not great either. I definitely think it’s not as mundane as these types of publications usually are :) If you’re really sneaky you might be able to find a full PDF of the Annual Report on their website :) The outlined elliptical background shapes, aligned in various angles, subtly spice up the pages just enough to not overdo it, I think. Let me know what you think.. the bad and the good, or nothing at all. I can take it ;) Just remember that, the one downfall of working with someone other than yourself, is that you are limited by their guidelines and expectations.Anyway, prepare for more regular postings. I got some other ones in the works. Posted on December 18th, 2006 by davidFiled under: art-n-design, work - 7 Comments » Rosy Friday! well well.. so, this had to have been one of the best Fridays ever (so far). It actually started off very shitty. I have been following the Wii hype for a while and have been itching to get one for a while. I wasn’t able to be there on launch day and have been listening to other people brag in envy. Usually, I avoid the “Black Friday” crazyness at the stores like the plague. But this time, it was different. I managed to get in line at Target around 4:20-ish AM. But ended up leaving empty-handed. I could elaborate on the insaneness of being at a retail store on “Black Friday” at this time, but that could be a whole ‘nother post. ToysRUs was actually my first choice but the line was way too long. Anyway, I go home, kind of sad. I already made up my mind that I won’t get one until after the Holidays. Good thing I had something else to look forward to. Sara had an appointment at the doctor regarding the pregnancy. A scheduled check-up where we were supposed to hear the baby’s heartbeat for the first time. This was at 10 AM. The doctor handed me the apparatus and placed the other end on Sara’s belly. It took a few seconds to find the right spot, but sure enough, there it was. With a 172 BPM swishing sound, we were able to listen to our child’s heartbeat. It still amazes me that there is a little person, with heartbeat and all, inside of my wife. We were and still are very joyous, especially after the doctor confirmed everything was going the way it should and there were no problems. I can’t wait for the ultrasound in mid January. In the meantime, we purchased some very cute bedding accessories for the soon-to-come babycrip from Pottery Barn Kids. The set has a theme called “Twinkle Twinkle” and we’re very happy with it. It included a runner, sheet, blanket and mobile. I plan to paint the nursery walls matching the theme. We just need to finish the basement, which has been coming along, so I can move my stuff down there and clear the room. So, after this we decide to go eat at Buffalo Wild Wings. Mmmmm, delicious. By now, it was around 11:50 AM or so. I was remembering reading somewhere online that the stores got their Wii’s as UPS and FedEx shipments throughout the day. I told Sara we should give it another shot and try Toys R Us - and she wanted to go there quickly anyway to check on the cribs they have there. I walked down the Electronics aisle, after we agreed that the cribs were pretty bad, and saw the Wii box in the showcase. I check the pouch that was supposed to contain the paper slip for the system and to my surprise there were about 10 or so in there. I quickly grab one and in disbelief ask the store employee if they really had them. He said, “Yes, we do - we just snuck those in there about 20 mins ago, and let me tell you, I’m very jealous!”. Wow, happyness overwhelmed me, although I couldn’t find a second controller. Quickly, we went to the video game aisle and find Zelda - The Twilight Princess and checkout. I couldn’t wait to go home. Obviously, this is my early Christmas and Birthday gift. Best Friday in a long time! And me and my wife have been playing the included Wii Sports quite a bit. She kicks my ass in bowling. Tennis and Boxing seems to be my expertise. I must say, I was very surprised how accurate Bowling is. It registers strength and spin quite well. I could go on and on about the Wii. Screw PS3 and XBOX. Sure they may have nicer graphics, but are they as fun to play as the Wii? I don’t think so. Good job Nintendo. I’m especially glad that my wife likes it as well. She usually isn’t a big video gamer, but she has been asking me whether we can play a game on it. Again, good job Nintendo. My arm is actually sore a little from Tennis and I am embarrassed to say I may have broke a little sweat in Boxing ;) I need to get more time into Zelda. I only played for about an hour, but I won’t have much time this weekend. Jordan, what is Andy’s and Mike’s Wii -? I want to add them to my system :) WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! Exit.music:: - Das Schweizer Onlinemusikmagazin - Mars Volta 2 - 07.03.05 - Rohstofflager Zürich
