From: Paul Saunders From: Paul Saunders Date: July 6, 2004 10:09:33 AM MDT To: Recipient List Suppressed: ; Subject: CAC ARTS NEWS No. 145 - 07/06/04 COLORADO ARTS CONSORTIUM http://www.coloradoartsconsortium.org CAC ARTS NEWS No. 145 07/06/04 Editor's Note: Last Friday I sent out an e-mail to the CAC Arts News e-mail suppressed list including the AOL suppressed list and the only "bounce" messages (if you can call them that) were for "out of office" notices. I appreciate the few responses and they were all positive in knowing that the Flesher-Hinton Music Store was posting the CAC Arts News on their Web site. You may even see the newsletter in the future on the Colorado Arts Concortium's Web site. Because everyone at the Consortium is a volunteer including our Web Miester, John Dandurand, it is difficult to load on more responsibility and work load, but John is looking into posting the newsletter on Please visit the Flesher-Hinton stores for all your musical needs. Please send an e-mail or in person thanks to Ken Anderson at Flesher-Hinton and if you ever feel left out of receiving your e-mail copy of CAC Arts News PLEASE GO TO On a personal note: It is very nice to know that someone out there in the state reads the newsletter. My wife was managing the Cultural Arts Council gallery in Estes Park this last Saturday when Mr and Mrs Breese came in to enjoy the plein-air paintings. They mentioned they had read about the Arts for the Parks exhibit in the newsletter and were heading over to see it. Marilyn said I was editor of CAC Arts News and they said how much they enjoyed it - even my little comments. Thank you so much! It is the bit of fuel I need to keep doing the newsletter. And if you think about it - have you hugged an artist today? Now there is a bumper sticker! Paul Saunders - From CAC President Paul N. Fiorino: Happy Fourth-Freedom day to you and all! Through the arts we truly can express our freedom and our future. We have so much to be thankful for and yet concern continues in a turbulent world around us. Can we reach out through our art and cross the cultural divide? Are we destined to conquer and divide, or collaborate and multiply our resources to the betterment of our communities? Time will tell, but the times call for productive artistic renovation from organizational development to preserving our heritage and history in the arts. Is The Lowenstein/Bonfils Theatre among the endangered places that could disappear, or become the next major project for arts education in technical/broadcast theatrical production? Where is the support for this jewel of East Denver? I know first hand what it takes to save a theatre, fortitude and a deed of trust. How many prospects where turned away from the ailing adolescent Denver Civic Theatre, on Santa Fe Drive Arts District. "this would make a great night club, offices, condos (so goes the Vogue on Pearl ) gutted and given over to other development". But she grew up after being offered to the community, time after time with little help, other than the the City's patience on the mortgage (which was just paid off within the first two years) with a new management/ownership that has taken the New Denver Civic theatre to a new horizon and success that she continues to enjoy through its controversy and history. Who remembers? Who cares? She stands in name and still produces our freedom to express through the visual and performing arts.(DCT has reached menopause, already). We have so many demonstrated examples throughout the State in saving theatres, from Grand Junction to Fort Collins to Salida and the trend must continue. Our freedom depends on it. PNF - Join the Colorado Arts Consortium in Pagosa Springs September 11 for a Statewide ArtpArty and Convention. The healing waters call for you to join us. Stay tuned. July 22 at 7:30 in the Civic Center Park in downtown Denver, is the opening of the Theatre In The Park. Presenting PETER & THE WOLF with Mayor Hickenlooper , Narrator and Gerry Endsley leading musicians from the Denver Municipal Band and The Colorado Symphony in collaboration with choreographer/dancer/CAC President Paul N. Fiorino and Ballet Arts Theatre. All three groups are SCFD affiliated. This is a FREE presentation - American For The Arts are officially our partner and you have a free membership by joining the Colorado Arts Consortium in bringing us to the next level of involvement, National support. Call 303-825-7570 for further information. - A FEW NEWS ITEMS FROM OUT OF THE METRO AREAWORTH REPEATING : ARTS for the PARKS is now on Display! In Estes Park 100 Paintings depicting our national park system Simply breathtaking - do not miss this one! Where: Intermediate School Gymnasium 1505 Brodie Ave. Hours: Tuesday - Sunday 10 AM to 5 PM, closed Monday and the 4th of July Admission: $5 per person, children 12 and under free Please join us, this national exhibition is only here until July 11 We are the only Colorado stop on the seven stop tour October 2003- August 2004 Here's a few facts ......................................... ORGANIZER: The National Park Academy of the Arts (NPAA) was established 17 years ago by a group of business men in Jackson, WY – "to enhance public awareness of our National Parks". Artists pay entry fees for each slide sent in. A portion of artist the entry fees goes to the National Parks Conservation Association Grand Teton Field Office, with a majority going to the cash prizes amounting to $85,000. LOCAL SPONSOR: The CULTURAL ARTS COUNCIL OF ESTES PARK, a NON-PROFIT organization, was created by the Town Trustees 14 years ago. The Town does provide advertising support, but no direct cash support for the national exhibit. The Arts Council pays rent for the exhibit to the NPAA, shipping, insurance, rent to the school, and promotion costs – approximately $25,000. Grants, admissions, tour merchandise sales and contributions help to cover this cost. THE COMPETITION: 1,687 slides were submitted. The jury viewed all the slides from Region I and selected 67 paintings, repeated the process for II & III. Artists were notified to ship the 200 paintings to Jackson. Jury returned and made final selection from paintings – NOT from slides. AWARDS & SALES: There is an Opening Night Banquet & Awards Ceremony at Jackson Lake Lodge, followed by a silent auction. Paintings SOLD (RED DOTS) may have sold for more than price shown on title cards. You may view the paintings & prices on NPAA web site (www.artsfortheparks.com) PRIOR to the opening and authorize them to bid for you up to a limit you set. ONLY 41 of the paintings have been SOLD; 59 are still available. We would be HAPPY to put one or more on your credit card! CURRENT EXHIBIT: Region I: 36 paintings representing 24 park sites; II: 31 paintings, 25 sites; III: 33 paintings, 17 sites. A total of 66 park sites are represented – more than ever before. There are usually about 20 paintings representing Grand Teton NP & Yellowstone NP. Thankfully there are only 11 this year as more parks are represented. There are 6 paintings representing Colorado sites: 5 from RMNP and 1 from Black Canyon of the Gunnison NP. INSTALLATION: It took our crew 1 1/2 days to set up the panels, and 1 1/2 days to uncrate the paintings. Total set-up took 5 FULL days, approximately 250 man/woman hours of HARD work. It takes the equivalent of 3 people each day (roughly 80 docents) to staff the exhibit from 6/19 to 7/11. Then more work to take down and re-crate. Plus record keeping, etc. We can always use volunteers. Would You like to help? If so, please call 970-586-9203 to volunteer. - The Cultural Arts Council would like to thank Lynda Vogel and Marilyn Saunders for all of their organizational work , Dave Schutz and crew; Joe Burch, Mike Oline, Larry Blinn, Richard Simpson, Frank Crone and Ron Wilcocks for all the set up and tear down, Paul and Marilyn Saunders for hanging the 100 paintings and Ben Forbes and all the volunteer docents for making the 2004 exhibit so successful. And thanks to all who have volunteered for past Arts for the Parks exhibits. - From: "Deb Avery" Juried Art Show "Moments to Mouments" will hang in the Art Gallery at the Cortez Cultural Center from July 7th to July 31st. My friend Karen Valdez (an Up With People alum) is helping me by putting a brainstorming session together to help me save loosing my condo. I know you are not Up With People alums, but rather acting friends and family. I thought you might want to get involved and assist me in some way. Please read the attached information and respond to Karen who is coordinating everything. Thanks, George George was performing in the musical KITTY HAWK at the Walden Family Playhouse on April 13th when he fell off the stage. He fractured his left ankle, ripped his right quad and ripped the rotator cuff. He is pretty much homebound because walking is very difficult for him. He uses a walker or a wheelchair. He has Physical and Occupational Therapy daily but he wants and needs other contact with the outside world. He still needs the rotator cuff surgery, which won't take place for at least 8 weeks so that he can walk better without fear of falling and not being able to get up. His "Real" family is not in town and they don't understand the dire straits he is in so he is asking for Help from His Up With People family. I have been assisting George Jackson D77, E78 for a month now. He needs a variety of things from meals, laundry, money, a friendly phone call, but most importantly he needs legal and mortgage banking help right now. He has been out of work for a while with workman's compensation his income. As of August 3, 2004, the mortgage company will be auctioning off his house because of missed payments. He needs some advice and help with these matters of what is the best thing for him to do? How to do it? HELP. He needs fundraising help, and who better to figure that out, but alumni? He'd like to have a group gathering of some of the alumni in the Denver/Colorado area for brainstorming and help from the different professionals from our group. He is wanting to see if there is a way to raise the $$ he needs, help him find a job, get a handle on his affairs, and move on with a life without these difficulties. Please help me, Help George. National Public Radio ombudsman Jeffrey Dvorkin has a problem with NPR's music reviews. "NPR regularly reviews new music. This is good, since it takes NPR listeners out of what is familiar and exposes them to what is happening in other parts of the culture. problem, according to some listeners, is that NPR's reviews are too hip to be good journalism. In short, some musical commentary, especially on All Things Consdered, is incomprehensible to some listeners, and I confess, to me." National Public Radio 07/01/04 A Link Between TV and Puberty? Though there's still no definitive link between watching TV and an increase of violence, there may be one between TV-watching and puberty. "Girls are reaching puberty much earlier than in the 1950s. One reason is due to their average increase in weight; but another may be due to reduced levels of melatonin. Scientists at the University of Florence in Italy found that when youngsters were deprived of their TV sets, computers and video games, their melatonin production increased by an average 30 per cent. New Scientist 06/30/04 (What is a girl to do! Get out in the sun to get a little melatonin to slow that puberty thing and then age the hide for life. pbs) The Secret Of London's Success (Hear That US?) London has become one of the great world cities just a decade or so after pundits were predicting her decline. What's the evidence? "An amalgam of the world language, an open culture, two of the world's top 10 universities and a vibrant cultural and intellectual life. Example: Britain now publishes more book titles than any other country. Further example: there are more Chinese students in the UK than in any other country, again more than the US. Of course, this is a UK phenomenon but it is one that is skewed disproportionately to the South-east." The Independent (UK) 07/01/04 Is London's Success Harming The Rest Of UK? Yes, London has become a powerhouse. But is it to the detriment of the rest of England? "In the last decade, the island of Britain has become split effectively into two provinces: the megalopolis of London, and everywhere else. The seeds of this north-south divide go a long way back, but the final transformation of the British Isles into an appendage of Greater London has really taken place since the start of the 1990s." The Scotsman 07/01/04 (London is wonderful. Just don't drive in it. Besides, I have a theory about putting too many mice in the maze. Do it and some tails get bitten off. Visit the Lake Country. pbs) ARTS ISSUES http://www.artsjournal.com/artsissues SF Mayor Drops Arts Funding Merger Plan "Faced with stiff opposition from the San Francisco arts crowd, Mayor Gavin Newsom has dropped his controversial budget proposal to merge the city's Grant for the Arts program with the San Francisco Arts Commission - at least for now." San Francisco Chronicle 07/05/04 Reform Bug Hits Non-Profit Management After Congress passed legislature tightening accountability on corporations, non-profits are looking at their management operating standards with an eye to reform. "Efforts at philanthropic self-policing have been launched across the nation. They aim to counter public perceptions that financial abuses may be widespread at charities and to deflect lawmakers' calls for more federal regulation." Chicago Tribune 07/05/04 Bioterrorism Fumble Against Artist Is Worrisome Sign So the Steve Kurtz "bioterrorism" case has been resolved, and Kurtz has been cleared of terrorism suspicion. "His case is the latest 'whoops' as America tries to regain its legal balance post-9/11. The government is walking the line between prosecution and persecution. In Kurtz's case, it stumbled. Pre-9/11, that's where it would have ended. Those days are gone. The FBI was called. Kurtz was arrested, his neighbors evacuated and a hazmat team in spacesuits picked through his trash. With the (Joe) McCarthy era, it was a Communist in every corner. Now it's a terrorist lurking everywhere." Buffalo News 07/02/04 (Really, I'm not paranoid. I just wish "they" were not out to get me. pbs) Political Art, Or Mindless Activism Disguised As Culture? George W. Bush may be a divisive leader to many, but there is no question that he has managed to unite one group like few U.S. politicians in history: artists, from painters to actors to musicians, are coming together in record numbers, all with the common goal of ridding the world of this American president. But when does political art become so strident that it ceases to be good art? "Many inside and outside the arts question whether such overt political expression - created expressly to effect change - crosses the line of art and simply becomes a colorful op-ed piece. It's important for the art to stand on its own merits... regardless of the message within it." The plan is being seen as "an admission that while the focus on numeracy and literacy in primary schools has been necessary to raise standards, it is too narrow." Denver Post 06/29/04 DANCE http://www.artsjournal.com/dance Say Goodbye To Frankfurt Ballet The Frankfurt Ballet gave its final performance Sunday night. "After many curtain calls and a few tears, the Frankfurt Ballet ceased to exist. One of the most exciting chapters in contemporary dance was over. As one troupe dies, however, another is taking shape, because a new Forsythe Company should be born in January. And it too will be based in Germany. Unlike the Frankfurt Ballet, which worked from the Frankfurt opera house, the Forsythe Company will have two homes." The New York Times 07/05/04 Will Cleveland Lose Its FM Overdose? The Cleveland-based experimental dance troupe known as Sub-Atomic Frequency Modulation Overdose (SAFMOD) is facing a very uncertain future, as company veterans scramble to keep its tradition alive. "Founding artistic director Young Park and managing director Ezra Houser shocked their colleagues last spring by revealing their plans to leave Cleveland at the end of the summer and resettle in Toronto." The couple gave SAFMOD time to find replacements for them, but its been slow going, and time is running out. The Plain Dealer (Cleveland) 07/03/04 UK Report: Dance Needs New Strategy A new study of dance in the UK says that dance companies have become too reliant on public funding, and need a new strategy to survive. According to the study, "about 12% of the population went to a live dance event in 2003, with overall attendance at ballet and contemporary dance events reaching 5.1 million. More than a quarter of all adults in 2001 took part in some form of dance, ranging from tap dancing to nights out 'clubbing'." BBC 07/01/04 Everybody Dances! The Mark Morris Dance Company's annual residency at Tanglewood has developed into one of the more collaborative projects ever undertaken at the New England music center. "The unique aspect of the Tanglewood project is that the musicians - singers and instrumentalists alike - learn Morris's choreography as well; they learn to put the music into their bodies in a different way. They not only rehearse one movement of the music they will be playing; they actually perform it, for an invited audience of staff, friends, and fellow students." Boston Globe 07/01/04 NY City Ballet's Low Point (We Just Saw It) Robert Gottleib is unequivocal about New York City Ballet's unleashing of a Boris Eifman Balanchine tribute: "Eifman's Musagète may not be the worst ballet ever put on by New York City Ballet-the last 20 years have offered it lots of competition-but its premiere last Friday was without question the lowest point in the history of the company (and I've been following its fortunes since the beginning, in 1948)." New York Observer 06/30/04 Maine Ballet Seeks New Home The Maine State Ballet wants to convert a brick warehouse into a new performance home. Seattle Times 06/29/04 MEDIA http://www.artsjournal.com/media Are Documentaries The Next Big Thing? With the success of Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11, critics are wondering if documentaries are going to be the next big thing in movies. "Are documentaries going to be taken more seriously? The short answer is yes. But Michael Moore is still a special case. He's become a star, almost like any other star. That said, I do think audiences are getting used to going to documentaries in a way they haven't before." "By 1997, a miserable 12 home-grown films were released per year in Russia. By last year, however, that had shot up to 75, state sponsorship has risen by 14 per cent in 2004 to $70 million, and an average of 30 per cent of any film's budget is now provided by the government. Add to this the fact that most urban Russians under 35 cite filmgoing as their favourite pastime, and the predicted rise this year in the number of screens in Russia from 550 to 700, and it seems that Stollywood has arrived." The Telegraph (UK) 07/03/04 Finally Embracing Reality, Yet Again The music industry appears to have finally embraced downloading as the wave of the future, and many are asking what took so damn long. But John Naughton says that we shouldn't be surprised by the industry's slow embrace of the obvious: "The fact that the music moguls resisted music downloading for so long is par for the course. They opposed audio, cassette and video taping and, later, DVD. Yet each turned out to be extraordinarily profitable. Movie studios now earn far more from videos and DVDs than they do from cinema audiences, but they had to be dragged kicking and screaming into the DVD world." The Observer (UK) 07/04/04 New Boss, Same Old Line When Jack Valenti steps down as president of the Motion Picture Association of America later this summer, he will hand the reins to former Congressman and Secretary of Agriculture Dan Glickman, a darkhorse candidate chosen for his Washington influence rather than his connection to Hollywood. But don't expect the MPAA's party line to change: according to Glickman, his top three priorities will be "piracy, piracy, piracy." Philadelphia Inquirer 07/03/04 Actually, On Second Thought, We're Fine, Thanks When the British government closed a tax loophole covering the private funding of major films, the UK film industry went ballistic, claiming that the change would literally kill off the nation's movie business. A few months on, however, the industry is admitting that new sources of funding have been found, and nothing has really changed. In fact, experts expect "the numbers of films and jobs in the industry in 2004 to end up roughly the same as 2003." But regular supporters have already come forward asking how they can help, and a few have sent cheques for hundreds of pounds." The Scotsman 07/05/04 Jazz In Montreal The 25-year-old Montreal Jazz Festival is one of the world's great music festivals. "The festival's sense of its own history is one. As large an enterprise as the event has become - 500 concerts, 10 indoor stages, another 12 on the downtown streets around Place des Arts, attendance approaching two million - it tempers its penchant for grandiosity with a strong sentimental streak." The Globe & Mail (Canada) 07/05/04 SF Opera - System Failure In America Why did Pamenla Rosenberg withdraw from running San Francisco Opera? Financial Times 07/04/04 Rock's Birthday? It's A Black & White Debate On July 5, 1954, Elvis Presley recorded his first single. That's reason enough for BMG Records, which distributes the Presley catalog, to declare the date as the birthday of rock 'n roll. "But the marketing blitz, by BMG as well as other companies, reopens a nagging debate: Just when did rock really begin? It's an issue that has long been tinged with racism, specifically the notion that it took a white man to make it rock 'n roll, whereas before it was only R&B and what was then described as 'race music.'" Boston Globe 07/04/04 The Do-It-Yourself Album "Record labels are still vital for many musicians. They get the CD in the bins; they advertise it; they put up the money to produce it in the first place." But for established artists who are sick of the huge revenue chunk swallowed up by traditional labels, a new do-it-yourself method is emerging, and many artists are willing to put up their own money for production costs in return for having direct control of a web-based distribution network that brings in more eventual revenue. The New York Times 07/04/04 The Orchestral Wage Gap Are conductors and executives bankrupting American orchestras? Blair Tindall sees a basic conflict between the skyrocketing salaries of those at the top, and the cries of institutional poverty which have led to stagnating musician salaries and increasingly bitter fights between labor and management. It's true that, of 20 orchestras which settled new musician contracts in the last year, 19 included wage cuts. Still, most musicians don't seem to be bothered by the high salaries of their bosses, just so long as the conductors and CEOs appear to be earning their pay. But with the industry widely perceived to be in trouble and salaries continuing to climb, those at the top may soon find themselves under fire. The New York Times 07/04/04 Heating Up Summer in New York For orchestras like the Boston Symphony, which have revered summer homes like Tanglewood, the long hot months are a celebration of easy revenue and casual concertgoing. But for the New York Philharmonic, which has no regular summer destination, what's needed to get its home audience into the hall during the second season is constant innovation and, um, snappy slogans? "Welcome to Summertime Classics, the fun new festival of smile-inducing classics performed live for you by your New York Philharmonic, in a lively, colourful and refreshingly casual setting. And he argued that, because he was repeating his own words, he hadn't committed plagiarism, which is the theft of another's work." "The 24- to 48-hour turnaround of these reviews poses the question of whether a barge-size book like My Life can be read in its entirety in such short order-let alone reviewed. How long might it take to read My Life? Slate assigned one-third of My Life to three staffers and they recorded 27 man-hours of reading and note-taking. Surely a full-fledged review of My Life by one person would require somewhere in the neighborhood of 27 hours for reading, plus sleep breaks, and maybe another couple of hours for composition..." The New York Times 07/04/04 Actors Strike Would Mean High Broadway Attrition Broadway producers are anxious about the possibility of an actors strike this summer. Many shows would close. How many? "Almost a third of the shows running right now probably would cut their losses in the event of a strike and close. That's partly because of timing. The musicians' strike occurred in March, so Broadway had plenty of time rebound during the robust spring run-up to the Tony Awards. But the summer is a lot dicier." New York Post 07/02/04 Britain's New Cabaret Live performance and cabaret acts have never been so popular in the UK. "Welcome to Britain's Cabarenaissance. The New York Times 07/05/04 Minimalism (Finally) Gets Its Due "For years, minimalism shows were rare events. In just the last year or two, however, they've hit the big time, big-time... The current flood of minimalism exhibitions indicates a new desire to come to grips with the movement as a whole and to rethink some of the narrow polemics that have built up around it. Instead of being part of the live, ferocious debates of contemporary art, with people choosing sides for and against, minimalism is now the subject of measured, art-historical contemplation. Which means it has truly arrived - next stop, official, unquestioned Old Master status." Washington Post 07/04/04 The Disappearing Stadium "Imagine a sports stadium that accommodates thousands of fans for an event, then folds up and disappears. Impossible? Perhaps. But it's one of the visions that will appear in the upcoming Venice Architecture Biennale... It improbably envisions a baseball field inserted within the urban thicket of Chicago's Loop. The field would be surrounded by a series of movable seating tiers. The tiers, some of which would be constructed into surrounding buildings, would fold and unfold as needed. As outlandish as the idea seems, [the Chicago architectural firm] Studio Gang already has proved it is possible to design and construct a performance venue whose architectural identity changes to suit changing needs." Chicago Tribune 07/04/04 Is The Saatchi Empire Crumbling? Charles Saatchi has never exactly been a favorite with critics. The insanely rich collector has been panned for his lack of discriminating taste, excoriated for inflating prices all over the art world, and even criticized for the architecture of his new London gallery. But the myth of Saatchi, who was once viewed as a mysterious but powerful force in art, may have finally come crashing down in the aftermath of the fire which destroyed more than 100 works in his prized collection. The public reaction to the catastrophe was brutal, the loss "celebrated as a hilarious and deserved comeuppance for Saatchi and his bloated, overpraised, overpaid protegés." But with ten times the players there were during the art bubble of the 80s, are we in for even a bigger crash this time around?
