So allow us to formally introduce you to John in our first ever installment of 'Hottie Alert', a recurring column you'll see every other Monday on Gay Wired." name=description> Article Hottie Alert: John Vesely 03.05.07 By Bryan Ochalla If you consider yourself part of the emo scene or just like a bit of heartfelt acoustic music now and then, you may have heard of Secondhand Serenade or the group’s semi-hit song, “Vulnerable.” You probably don’t know the name John Vesely, though, which is strange considering he and his trusty guitar are the only members of the above-mentioned “band.” Such anonymity shouldn’t last long, as not only are Secondhand Serenade’s (er, Vesely’s) tunes easy on the ears, the singer/songwriter himself is easy on the eyes, too. Achieving some level of stardom will be quite a leap for the Menlo Park, Calif,-based Vesely, who just a few years ago could only daydream of such a future while toiling away in a department store. "I wrote a lot of my songs at Neiman Marcus, and some of them at Bloomingdale's," Vesely said in a recent article on Billboard.com. "I did a lot of writing on receipt paper." Eventually those receipts added up, and after Vesely scraped together enough money for eight days of studio time he recorded ten tracks for the album eventually released (and now available) as Awake. Vesely apparently wasn’t interested in plastering his name all over the CD he worked so hard to produce and instead gave himself the emo-riffic name of Secondhand Serenade. “It's everything I would want in a band name and more,” he said on his MySpace page. “It basically sums up what I do. I write my songs about events and feelings that occur in my life, and I sing the songs to my wife. Everyone else gets the Secondhand Serenade.” Yeah, you read that quote right: Vesely’s married (to a woman, no less). But he’s also quite a hottie, hence this little write up. And even though he’s already taken, the kind of tug-at-your-heartstrings songs he writes and sings are sure to make even the most hardened gay man crumble into a soft, weepy mess. I mean, who could resist lyrics such as: “It's true I can’t go on without you/your smile makes me see clearer/if you could only see in the mirror what I see.” OK, so they sound a bit trite on paper, but believe me, they—along with Vesely’s soulful croon—will rope you in like Jake Gyllenhaal from Brokeback Mountain (it's already worked its magic on quite a few people—more than 10,000 copies of the album have been sold since its release along with more than 73,000 digital tracks, according to Nielsen SoundScan).
